On
Thursday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m., the Leach Library will have Mr. Brian Jennison present
“A Fond Look Back at Railroading in Northern New England”.
Mr.
Jennison was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, attended high school in Durham and
then the University of New Hampshire. He
received a doctorate in Zoology from U.C. Berkeley, and, after a career in air
quality management on the West Coast, Brian moved back to New Hampshire, where
he worked for the New Hampshire Department for Environmental Services, and,
later, for the Springfield Terminal Railroad.
He lives in Newmarket on the old Boston & Maine line.
This
slideshow presentation journeys through the history of New England railroads
with an emphasis on the Boston & Maine (B&M) Railroad. Mr. Jennison’s collection of photos will detail
some construction of precursor railroads, their eventual acquisition by the
B&M, and their decline throughout the 20th century due to highway and
airline competition. The presentation
will also include color slides from the late 1960s through the early 1980s.
This
program is free and open to the public with seating limited to the first 90
individuals. It will be held in the library’s
lower-level meeting room. Light
refreshments will be served.
