Leach Library Hosts “Painting the Sky: The Northern Lights”

On Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m., the Leach Library will host Dr. Alexa Halford for an evening presentation of “Painting the Sky: The Northern Lights”.
Dr. Halford is a space physics researcher at Dartmouth University working with the BARREL mission, a multiple-balloon investigation that will study Earth’s radiation belts.  She studied geomagnetic storms and sub-storms for her Master’s degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, and received her Ph.D. at University of Newcastle NSW in Australia, where she wrote her thesis on electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves.
In this slide show presentation, Dr. Halford will discuss the lore of the aurora, how it has been scientifically studied, and what we are still learning about these mysterious lights.  Also, included in this presentation are recent images of the Northern Lights taken by Dr. Halford herself.
This presentation is free and open to the public with seating limited to the first 90 individuals. It will be held in the library’s lower-level meeting room.  Light refreshments will be served.
