Leach Library Brings ‘Slattery and Stewart’

On Thursday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m., the Leach Library will host ‘Slattery and Stewart,’ who will perform songs from their lively Cajun repertoire as well as the upbeat fiddle tunes of French Canada and New England and the occasional mountain ballad. Slattery and Stewart are made up of fiddler, Andy Stewart, and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Mary Jo Slattery. The duo has toured extensively, performing in such places as Mexico, Louisiana, and Jamaica. Recognized by Louisiana’s Cajun French Music Association for the authenticity of their style and repertoire, these two versatile musicians also play with the Cajun band the ‘Offshore Aces.’ Slattery and Stewart also play as part of the contra dance band, ‘Northern Spy,’ whose music is included in the Smithsonian Folkways CD on New Hampshire social dancing titled Choose Your Partner! Their presentation will take you on a tour through the musical traditions of several regions in North America, including our own New England. Slattery and Stewart will demonstrate these different styles using traditional songs and instruments such as the fiddle, guitar, ‘ti fer, and fiddlesticks. Please join us for what promises to be a lively evening performance. The program is free and open to the public. It will be held in the library’s lower-level meeting room. Light refreshments will be served.
