New Binge Box DVDs

Binge Box DVD sets are now available to borrow from the library! Each set contains 4-6 movies. Like other DVDs, they circulate for one week and may be renewed up to three times if there are no reserves. We kindly ask patrons to limit their selection to one set at a time while we are building the collection. 😊

Criterion Collection

The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, issued on DVD, that offer the highest technical quality and numerous special features. Among the great directors featured in the collection include Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stanley Kubrick. Leach Library currently holds 49 movies from the collection. The Battle of Algiers. Director: Gillo Pontecorvo. 1966. An account of the bloodiest revolution in modern history.

Bicycle Thieves. Director: Vittorio De Sica. 1948. A man and his son search for a stolen bicycle vital for his job.

La Haine. Director: Mathieu Kassovitz. 1995. Abdel, a local hoodlum, is hospitalized after a riot, where a policeman lost his gun. His friend Vinz finds it and claims he will kill a cop if Abdel dies.

The Red Balloon. Director: Albert Lamorisse. 1956. A red balloon with a life of its own follows a little boy around the streets of Paris.

Dale Chihuly: Master Glass Artist

Dale Chihuly is one of the finest artists working with glass in the world today. Over his 50 year career he has created thousands of pieces that are in over 200 museums across the globe. As one of the founders of the Pilchuck Glass School, he has helped to inspire and teach numerous glass makers through the years. Running April 10th – August 7th, Chihuly brings his masterworks to Boston with an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts. Leach Library allows you to access this world class museum at a reduced rate through its museum pass program. Nightmare on Elm Street is Back!

Attention horror fans! Freddy Krueger is back and invading your dreams again in the new Nightmare on Elm Street, which hits theaters on April 30th. Leach Library is the place to go to get the movies you want! No monthly subscription fees required! If the movie you want is out just reserve it and you’ll get a call when it has been returned. Not only that but you can have up to 35 movies out at one time! If we don’t have the movie you are looking for we’ll consider buying it and put it into the collection. In addition to our great collection of movies, don’t forget our nice collection of documentaries! DVD’s can be renewed three times so you can have it out for up to one month. Just remember to renew, which can be done over the phone, to avoid late fines which are $1 per day.

Documentaries on DVD at Leach Library

Did you know that Leach Library has over 300 documentaries in its DVD collection? The documentary collection covers a very wide range of subjects including American history, art history, current events, cooking, and astronomy. The overwhelming majority of documentary/nonfiction DVDs are given Dewey numbers and kept in the nonfiction section of the library, interspersed with the book collection. The entire DVD collection is cataloged so please search our catalog for information on specific titles or speak to a reference librarian for help.

New Documentaries to the DVD Collection:

When the Levees Broke (Call # DVD 363.34 WHE): Four acts document distinct perspectives on the pivotal events that preceded and followed Katrina’s passage through New Orleans, a catastrophe during which the divide between race and class lines have never been more pronounced.

Capturing the Friedman’s (Call # DVD 364.1 CAP): The Friedman’s seem to be a typical family from affluent Great Neck, Long Island. One Thanksgiving, as the family gathers for a quiet holiday dinner, a police battering ram splinters the front door and officers rush inside. The police charge Arnold and his son Jessie with hundreds of shocking crimes. As police investigate, and the community reacts, the fabric of the family begins to disintegrate, revealing questions about justice, family and finally the truth.
